Mangalore, Feb 6: The catholic community here celebrated the silver jubilee of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the city and 125th year of formation of Mangalore Diocese at Bajpe on Sunday February 6.
Bust of late Pope John Paul II was unveiled and holly mass was performed by Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza.
Bajpe parish priest Fr Mathias Pereira, Vicar of Pejavar deanery Fr John Mendonsa, Vicar general of Mangalore Diocese, Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Episcopal Vicar of Udupi Varado, Fr Baptist Menezes, director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, diocesan small community mission Fr Wilbert D’Souza, Diocese Estate Msgr Fr William Menezes, ICYM director Fr Anil D’Souza, Rakno weekly editor Fr Francis Rodrigues, YCS/YSM director Fr Ronald D’Souza, CODP director Fr Onil D’Souza, Jeppu workshop director Fr JB Crasta, St Joseph Engineering College director Fr Valerian D’Souza and Bajpe church assistant priest Fr Sunil George D’Souza among others graced the occasion.
Manamohan Malli was honoured by Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza for donating 7 cents of land containing the stage of Pope’s arrival on February 6, 1986, which is named as ‘Pope Layout’. Bajpe parish council vice-president Sylvester D'Souza and secretary David D' Souza were present. Denis Moras Prabhu delivered vote of thanks. George D’Souza compered the programme.
5,000 people of 10 churches, 50 priests, 250 nuns and religious people were present on the occasion.
There will be beatification of late Pope John Paul II on May 1 this year at St Peter’s Square, Rome. This has doubled the joy for the Catholic community here in the city.
Eucharistic procession will be held from Milagres Church at 3.45 pm to reach Rosario Cathedral at 6 pm where the special prayer will be offered.
